He’s destined for world fame, perhaps to be listed in TOP 10 landscape artists, although in Jamaica his works are not yet in the National Gallery. SEE LIST as at April 2011. That is if he, SHAUN REID, keeps focus on the levels he can climb and committed to mastering his skills. Having copped gold as an amateur artist, in a national competition, his works are being likened to master painters by visitors to Jamaica.
Reid is colourful and dynamic in his portrayal of landscapes and sometimes animal life of Jamaica, although he has flirted with abstracts in his earlier years. A self-taught artist, he read a lot about international artists such as local master Barrington Watson, and, international masters Michael Angelo, David Kassan and Leonardo daVinci. He teaches others in his Saint Mary studio to overcome one challenge he faces in that area – not enough appreciation or efficient number of teachers. Reid uses acrylics over oils, not because oils do not fascinate him and deliver, but because they dry quickly.
Reid’s story is interesting. He was never formally taught beyond his introduction to art in high school.
VISION STATEMENT:
“I paint landscapes, some animals, flora, and fauna all from St Mary and Portland. I paint because it brings a level of calmness. That’s the moment I meditate. I am just experimenting nature’s diversities around Jamaica . I paint for myself and others. If it doesn’t appeal to me in any way, I won’t be comfortable. My greatest moment was in 2006, when I won a gold medal in the amateur category of the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) arts festival, after only 2 years of painting. Someone said then that my work matched up with professionals. Otherwise I love when people spend good money on my art.”
PHILOPSOPHY:
“Autograph the work with excellence”
